Tech Support Scam: Fake Virus Warnings & Pop-Ups

A tech support scam claims your computer is infected or hacked to get remote access to it, your passwords, or a payment to “fix” it.

How the tech support scam works

Microsoft and Apple don't monitor your computer or call you about viruses. A pop-up with a phone number is fake. Once you call, they take control of your device or ask for payment and banking details.

Red flags to watch for

• A pop-up or call warning your computer has a virus, with a number to call
• A request to install software or hand over remote control
• Being asked for your online banking password
• Pressure to pay a fee to “clean” your computer

What it looks like

“Your computer is infected. Call this number now, and let us connect to fix it.”

What to do

1. Don't call the number — close the pop-up (restart the browser if needed).
2. Never let a stranger remote into your device.
3. Real support only happens when you reach out to the company yourself.
4. Report it to the FTC at 1-877-382-4357.
